About GASOW

Ghana Association of Social Workers (GASOW) is a professional body of trained and practicing social workers from all fields. We promote best practices and ethical standards as well as the protection of members.

Our Objectives

Addressing challenges and circumstances of Social Workers and Social Work Practice; promoting the exchange of information and experience among social workers in Ghana and in other countries through exchange programmes, conferences, publication of papers and professional journals; promoting training and research among its members;

uphold the principles of Universal Human Rights in collaboration with other National and International organizations, encourage social workers to assume their full responsibility of citizenship; advise stakeholders on issues relating to professional social welfare services, and contribute to policy formulation on social problems.

National Executives

President

Prof Kwadwo Ofori-Dua (PhD) is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Sociology and Social Work, Faculty
of Social Sciences, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, (KNUST) Kumasi.

He holds Doctor of Philosophy in Social Work and Master of Philosophy in Sociology from the University of
Ghana, Legon. He was appointed a lecturer in Sociology and Social Work in 2004. Since then, he has handled various courses and supervised many theses (both graduate and undergraduate) in Sociology, Social Work and Development Management. He was the Head of Department for Sociology and Social Work, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi from 2010 to 2011, and again from 2015 to 2017. He is currently the Coordinator of Social Work programme at KNUST,



Vice President

Mr. Dery Alexis is a qualified Social Worker from the University of Ghana, Legon with Masters Degrees
in Development Management (MPhil) and Social Policy and Development from the School of Governance and Leadership of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) and Middlesex University, London.

Alexis also received a post-graduate Diploma in NGO Management from GIMPA with specialized training in Resource Mobilization, Capacity Building Programs Designing and Delivery, Policy Influencing and Advocacy, Program Management and Monitoring and Evaluation
from the University of Ghana Business School and Washington University, Seattle, USA. He is the
founding Director of Center for Development Initiative, a pro-social work and social development
National Non-Governmental Organization.

Secretary General

Joyce Antoinette Kulevo is a Social Worker with the Department of Social Welfare. She holds a Master’s Degree in Population Studies from Regional Institute of Population Studies (RIPS) and Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work/Political Science all at University of Ghana, Legon. She has her first training at School of Social Work, Osu, Accra.

For the past 24 years, Joyce has practiced at various levels with local and International Non-Governmental Organizations. At street Girls’ Aid (SAID), Joyce worked as field worker/Street work Coordinator/Fundraising Officer. She played a key role in SAID’s baby care project with sponsorship from DANIDA and UNICEF. She is identified with Projects of street connected children and abused children.

Deputy Secretary General

Mabel Agbetsiafah is a Social Worker with more than 10 years in social influence. Mabel holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from University of Ghana, Legon and with diverse knowledge from Basics International (NGO) through to Food Bank Ghana as a Program Coordinator. She has interest in working with children to ensure their general wellbeing and to ensure that GASOW is put on the highest pedestal.

Finance Secretary

Evelyn Nanbigne holds a Bachelor of Education in Guidance and Counseling from University of Education,
Winneba and a Diploma in Social Work from School of Social Work (SSW), Osu Accra, Ghana. She has
been working with the Department of Social Welfare as a Social Worker for the past 10 years.

She possesses good interpersonal skills, report writing skills, good communication skills, computer skills and
can handle multiple task even under pressure. She is capable of working independently and within a team
leading various groups including NUGS Women’s Commissioner and Chairperson for SRC Week Financial
Committee. Evelyn is passionate about her Social Work career and would want to see many others coming
on board.

Organising Secretary

Nadiya Gebre-Michel Nokoe; is GASOW’s Assistance Organizational Secretary She is a multilingual,
passionate and professional social worker with humanitarian, development and population background.
Worked with Community-Based Organizations, Non-Governmental Organization and United Nations
worked voluntarily and paid.

Have proven skills in assessing identifying, analyzing, responding and addressing individuals and groups problems who are the most vulnerable persons including women, girls, children, youth, people with disabilities, elderly, HIV/AIDS affected/infected, victim of violence, conflict and war in an urban, semi-rural and a rural community.
